"W", "X", "Y", & "Z" Terminology

Weak Side: The opposite side of where the tight end lines up.

Weak Side Linebacker: The Linebacker that lines up on the side opposite from where the tight end is aligned.  The Weak Side linebacker is usually the best pass coverage linebacker on the field and will key on the running back at the snap of the ball. Sometimes referred to as the "Will".

Wide Receiver: Player whose primary concern is to catch the football thrown by the quarterback. The Wide receiver will align on the line of scrimmage, usually between the numbers and the sideline. Also known as "Wide Out".

Wild Card: A team that does not win their division, but still qualifies for the post-season due to having a better record among non-division winning teams.  In the NFL, there are two Wild Card qualifiers from each conference.  Wild Card teams will never have home field advantage at any point in the playoffs and must win three road games to advance to the Super Bowl.

Wild Card Weekend: The first weekend of the post-season, named such because all four wild card entrants will participate and will appear as the visiting team to the two lowest seeded division winners in each conference.  The winners of each game will advance to the Divisional Round of the playoffs the following weekend.
