"A" Terminology

All-Purpose Back: A running back that is a triple threat - can run between the tackles, has speed to gain the corner in the running game and has good hands and route recognition to contribute in the passing game.  Also known as "Lead Back" or "Bell Cow".

All-Purpose Yardage: A composite statistic of an "skill position" player, including rushing and receiving yardage, plus punt and kick return yardage.

All-Pro: A player who is designated by his peers as being the best in the game at his position.  The voting for the All Pro Team takes place after the Regular Season has concluded.

Attempt: Usually referring to a forward pass by the quarterback, normally referred to as a "passing attempt".

Audible: A system of play changes unique to each team.  Once a play is called in from the sideline, most quarterbacks have the autonomy to change the play - within the scope of the personnel groupings on the field - to give his team the best chance of success on the play when countering the alignment of the defense.

Automatic First Down: The result - along with composite yardage - for the most egregious of defensive penalties committed on the field of play.  Penalites that carry an automatic first down for the offense include Pass Interference, defensive holding, illegal contact, roughing the passer, late hit out of bounds and face mask, plus any other personal foul.
